Malabar Spinach Blossoms
It is not often that you see Malabar spinach blossoms in the markets in Singapore, so I was overjoyed to find them on Christmas Day for my Thai dinner celebration. Malabar spinach (Basella alba) is a nutritious leafy green native to South Asia, valued for its culinary and medicinal properties. While the thick, succulent leaves are well-known, the blossoms offer visual appeal and nutritional benefits.
The Malabar spinach blossom is a small, delicate flower that appears in clusters, typically ranging from white to light purple. Each flower features five petal-like sepals, creating a lovely visual contrast against the lush green foliage. The blossoms possess a mild, slightly earthy flavor that adds subtle freshness to dishes, making them ideal for garnishing or incorporating into recipes.
In terms of taste and aroma, Malabar spinach blossoms possess a light, delicate flavor that does not overpower other ingredients. This quality makes them an excellent addition to salads, where they can be enjoyed raw, or as a colorful topping for soups and stews. The flowers can also be incorporated into stir-fries, lending a splash of color and a touch of sweetness when cooked briefly, alongside other vegetables and proteins. Their tender texture and mild flavor pair well with fresh herbs, citrus, and creamy dressings, providing a nutritious boost to salads or as part of a vegetable platter. Additionally, the flowers can be infused into oils or vinegars to impart a subtle flavor when added to culinary creations.
Rich in vitamins A and C, calcium, and iron, Malabar spinach blossoms are a healthful addition to any diet. Traditionally, the plant has been used in herbal medicine to address digestive issues and inflammation.
